For this pageant, designers were required to come up with representations of their favorite desserts and sweets. It was a lot of fun to choose sweets and decide how to interpret them in couture. There was a wide variety of colorful and innovative designs, and it was interesting to judge the entries. Our cousin Claire joined us on this pageant as well. Here is a list of the sweets represented in the pageant.

Here are the winners:
1st Place:
Claire’s design was based on a cupcake, and she was very creative in her use of materials. As the edging of the short pink dress, she used a silver cupcake liner. She put gathered white satin at the neckline for frosting, and used beads and a High-Ho Cherry-O cherry for the topping. The judges decision was almost unanimous, this Barbie had to be Miss Sweet!

2nd Place:
Grace’s wedding cake dress blew us all away. She made a support system out of cardboard to give the dress its structured, tiered shape. She then accented the dress with tiny pink flowers. The dress definitely represented a wedding cake, but was still a beautiful, coherent design.

3rd Place:
Rachel’s fortune cookie design took third place. She made a long, slender Oriental style dress for her Barbie, then sewed a large fortune cookie shape out of the same gold brocade. Then, she embroidered an ivory ribbon with the words “Good Luck,” and had it come swirling out of the cookie and around the doll.

As always, we had alot of fun with this pageant. It was refreshing to design such fanciful and light hearted entries. All of the judges were impressed with the creativity of the designs.
