What in the World is a Barbie Pageant?

Above are the top three entries from the Miss Universe pageant.

Simply speaking, a Barbie pageant is event where my sister and I show handmade Barbie ensembles, and compete for the top honors.

Every pageant starts with  a theme. Past themes have included Brides, Songs, Candy, Christmas…..the list goes on and on!  Once we have decided on a theme, we choose dolls from our extensive Barbie collection (40+ dolls). Then, the real work begins. We work together in our craft room, planning and designing our entries. We sew most of our outfits by hand, but we also make use of our trusty Singer! As each Barbie nears comlpetion, we become more secretive, because we want the finished product to be a surprise.

On the day of the pageant, our whole family gathers together to watch the pageant. One by one, my sister and I take turns showing our entries. Once all the dolls have been brought out, each family member votes for the ones who will move onto the next round.

For this round, the judges get tougher. This time, as each doll is brought out, she is critiqued. The family once again votes, this time for the winners. When the “queen” is announced, that doll is given a crown and a bouquet, and put on display for several days.
